However, the main purpose of educating a child is to develop the child’s personality, to acquire knowledge to cope with any situation the child finds him or herself.
There are four main sources of education:
1. Home/church (Especially age-specific church models)
2. Traditional Education (6-3-3-4 system of education)
3. Travel
4. Mentoring
Our society has relegated all the other sources of education to the background with a particular focus on traditional Education, which seem to promise more returns economically. However, this is far from the truth!
To buttress this statement, as a Sunday school teacher, I have witnessed parents pay particular attention to their child’s assignment from school with little or no attention to Sunday school assignments. Their wards never have time for church activities but never miss out on school activities.
Going back to the four main sources of education earlier mentioned, I must state here, that a proper combination of these four will produce a superior personality that will be able to confront the challenges of life and a deficit in any one of them can destroy the child permanently.
Over 90% of life’s challenges are not logical, so if all your efforts in educating your child are just the traditional education, which centres on logical reasoning, that child would not be fully equipped to face life. By now, we all know that so many things do not respond to academic degrees. Even in the corporate world, companies have since realized that Emotional Intelligence is superior to logical intelligence or I.Q.
An important thing to note is that education does not stop with schooling. Napoleon Hill, Author of the best seller titled, “Think and grow rich” says Education is a derivative of the Greek word “Educo” meaning to educe, to bring out, to draw out, and to develop from within.
Therefore I submit to you ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, that you have not been educated until you can express your latent potential to the world. The goal of education is to develop that which is you and not impose something that you are not on you. Ironically, by accident or design, our current educational system seems not to function this way. The way out of this is to continue to educate yourself through personal development to express the graces God has endowed you with. Don’t let the programming you have received from the university by your degree limit what you can do. You have the capacity to do much more than that.
Though I disagree with the Da Vinci Code, Leonardo Davinci is one of the few men who refused to be boxed. Apart from his popularity in the arts, he was an architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, anatomist, Geologists, cartographer, botanist, and of course a writer. Google about his inventions and contributions to knowledge and you will be amazed at what one man can do.
Self-education is what ultimately leads to self-discovery, so the ball is up to you to keep learning even though you are out of school. Many people today are being paid for the skills they acquired through learning and not their paper qualification.
There are many Artists locked up within some souls because they are carrying an engineering degree.
There are many social workers locked up within some souls because they are carrying a degree in humanities.
There are many inventors locked up within some souls because they are carrying a degree in arts.
There are many historians locked up within some souls because they are carrying a degree in accounting.
Has your education disempowered you?
